There are plenty of brass catchers on the market. Many of them work great at the range. But when it comes to real-world hunting, most are too bulky to take into the field. This compact, field-tested brass catcher is what we personally use at Basic Precision when hunting hogs here in Texas. It mounts securely to the magazine well, stays out of the way, and easily collects fired ammunition casings from AR-15 or AR-10 rifles. This lets you recover your brass for reloading. Otherwise, you'd simply leave it behind in the dark. It holds up to 30 empty cases, which is more than enough for most hunting situations.
The Brass Goat brass catcher is offered in three models:
- BG-15 for AR-15 platform rifles
- BG-10 for AR-10 platform rifles
- BG-10 RSF for AR-10 platform rifles & Ruger SFARAR-10 compatible
Key Field-Relevant Features:
-
Slide-in, slide-out design — Attaches instantly to the magazine well and
removes just as easily. No mounting hardware required. Detachable hopper for quick emptying and reinstallation during a hunt. - Lightweight yet rugged and heavy duty — Made of durable ABS resin and polycarbonate materials.
- Efficient brass recovery — Captures fired casings reliably during rapid fire, ensuring a seamless shooting experience without jams.
- Lightweight & Compact yet Practical — Weighing only 6.5 oz, Brass Goat holds up to 30 empty cases without adding bulk or weight to your rifle setup.
-
Proudly made in the USA — Beware of cheaper imported alternatives.
WARNING! —They don’t stay securely on the magwell and tend to shift under recoil. Basic Precision field-tested both the original Brass Goat and the imported alternative. The U.S.-made Brass Goat stays rock-steady under all conditions, while the imported alternative consistently shifts off the magwell and requires constant readjustment—possibly tolerable at the shooting range, but absolutely unacceptable during real-world night hunting or tactical engagement.

Compatible with AR-15 and AR-10 lower receivers:
- For AR-15 platforms: Fully compatible with any MIL-SPEC lower receiver.
- For AR-10 platforms: Unlike the AR-15, the AR-10 does not have a standardized military specification (MIL-SPEC)—various manufacturers have developed their own versions, resulting in multiple incompatible patterns. To ensure the AR-10 version of the Brass Goat brass catcher sits rock-solid on any AR-10 platform rifle, it comes with a set of five differently sized shims that snap on inside the bracket, attaching to the magwell. Once snapped into place, the shim adjusts the bracket’s internal dimensions to match a specific rifle model, allowing for a secure and compatible fit. Below is a compatibility chart showing which shim number fits which AR-10 model or pattern.
